Introduction

For a smooth transfer at the RTA, you must arrive with the right paperwork. Forgetting a single document can delay or even kill the deal.

Core Terminology

TermMeaning
Emirates IDThe mandatory personal identification card issued by the UAE government.
Traffic FileYour TC Number in the Emirate where the plate is registered — mandatory for buyers.
Trade LicenceA valid business licence — required when buying or selling plates under a company name.

For Buyers

You are the one receiving the asset. You need:

  1. Original Emirates ID: Must be valid.
  2. Traffic File (TC Number):
    • If you already own a car in this Emirate, you have one.
    • If not, you can open one on the spot using your Emirates ID and visa.
    • Note: Your visa typically creates a Traffic File only in the same Emirate (e.g., Dubai visa → Dubai TC No.). Buying a plate in another Emirate may require opening a "Non-Resident" file, which has its own rules.
  3. Payment method: Cash or Manager's Cheque.

For Sellers

You are relinquishing the asset. You need:

  1. Original Emirates ID: To verify your identity.
  2. Plate Ownership Certificate: Digital or physical copy.
  3. Physical plate deposit (sometimes):
    • If the plate is active on a vehicle: You must remove it and surrender it at the centre (unless transferring a valid registration).
    • If the plate is retained (electronic): The certificate alone is sufficient.

Company Transfers

If buying or selling under a company name:

  1. Trade Licence copy: Must be valid.
  2. Authorisation letter: Signed and stamped by the company owner or manager.
  3. Representative's ID: The PRO or person handling the transfer in person.
