Plate Transfer Basics
Introduction
Transferring ownership of a number plate is a government-regulated procedure. Because AUTO.AE connects you directly with the seller, the actual legal exchange takes place offline at an official centre (such as the RTA in Dubai).
This guarantees both sides are protected: the buyer receives the number, and the seller receives payment — simultaneously.
Core Terminology
| Term | Meaning |
| Traffic File | Your personal record at the traffic authority (TC Number) — you must have one to receive a plate. |
| Manager's Cheque | A bank-guaranteed cheque — the safest payment method for high-value plate deals. |
| Customer Service Centre | The official government location (e.g., Tasjeel, RTA) where plate transfers are processed. |
What You Will Learn Here
- Offline only: Why the deal must happen in person.
- Traffic File: The single mandatory requirement for buyers.
- Clearing fines: The seller's responsibility.
The Transfer Flow
To officially move a plate from the seller's name to yours, follow these steps:
- Agree on terms: Settle on a price and meeting time via Chat / WhatsApp.
- Meet in person: Go together to an official Customer Service Centre (e.g., Tasjeel or the RTA Main Centre).
- Verification: An officer checks the seller's ownership and the buyer's eligibility (Traffic File).
- System transfer: The officer initiates the change in the system.
- Payment & receipt: You pay the seller (Cash / Manager's Cheque) and receive the new Ownership Certificate.
Requirements
To register a plate in your name, you must hold a valid Traffic File (Traffic Code No.) in the Emirate where the plate is registered.
| Requirement | Detail |
| Emirates ID | A valid original ID is mandatory. |
| Traffic File | If you do not have one, it can be opened at the centre (quick procedure). |
| Visa | Your residence visa should usually be issued by the same Emirate (e.g., Dubai visa for a Dubai plate), though rules can differ for investors. |
Payment Safety
Since these are high-value deals (often 50 k – 1 M+ AED), security is paramount.
- No online payments: Do not send bank transfers before meeting face to face.
- Manager's Cheque: The safest way to pay large sums — it guarantees the funds to the seller.
- Cash: Acceptable for smaller amounts, but counting large bundles at the centre is impractical and risky.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Clear fines: The seller must settle any traffic fines linked to that plate code.
- Visit the centre: Go to a main location (e.g., Tasjeel Al Barsha, Al Manara).
- Request the service: Select "Transfer Number Plate Ownership."
- Sign: Both parties sign (digitally or on paper).
- Pay fees: The buyer typically covers the RTA transfer fees (approx. 400–600 AED, depending on the Emirate).
- Collect ownership: You receive a new Ownership Certificate (Mulkiya for the plate).
Pitfalls to Avoid
- Forgetting the "Code": Make sure the transfer paperwork specifies the exact Code + Number you agreed on.
- Wrong Emirate visa: Attempting to buy an Abu Dhabi plate with a Dubai visa without first opening an Abu Dhabi traffic file. (You can open one, but you must do it beforehand.)
