Negotiation Tips

Introduction

Bargaining is a normal part of buying a car in the UAE, but how far you can push depends on the seller and the vehicle's condition. What works with a private owner may not fly at a large dealership. This article outlines a respectful, fact-based approach to the conversation.

Core Terminology

LeverageConcrete findings (scratches, worn tyres, missing service records) used to justify a lower offer.
Fixed PriceA listing with a stated figure. In the UAE, most prices are still open to discussion despite the label.

What You Will Learn Here

This article covers:

  • Gauging how much room there is to negotiate.
  • Using evidence (videos, history) as bargaining leverage.
  • Why a price may be suspiciously low.
  • Crafting a polite and effective offer.

Check the Price Label First

Before requesting a discount, look at how the seller has tagged the price.

  • Fixed Price / Ask for Price: Sellers either state a number or hide it ("Ask for Price"). In practice, nearly every price in the UAE market is open to some negotiation, regardless of the label.

Gather Facts Before Talking Numbers

Good negotiation is built on evidence, not just a wish to pay less. Before quoting a figure:

  1. Request a video: Ask for a walk-around clip to assess the real condition.
  2. Ask about history: "Has the car been in any accident?" or "Are there outstanding fines?"
  3. Verify specs: Confirm the claimed features are actually present.

If you spot minor issues (a scratch, ageing tyres, or gaps in the service record), reference them politely:

"I noticed the tyres will need replacing soon. Would you be open to adjusting the price to account for that?"

Why a Price Might Be Too Low

When a car is priced well below similar listings on the marketplace, proceed with caution.

  • Concealed damage: A bargain price often signals a prior accident (US salvage title) or excessive mileage.
  • Time pressure: The seller may be relocating and needs a fast sale.
  • Bottom line: Never assume a rock-bottom price is a bargain until you have checked the VIN and history report.

How to Open the Conversation

The platform makes it easy to start price discussions without awkwardness.

  1. Open the Chat.
  2. Use phrasing like "What is your best price?" in your message.
  3. This kicks off a courteous inquiry.

Key principle: Go for a "win-win." The seller gets a hassle-free sale; you get a fair price. A polite approach — "What is your best figure for a cash deal today?" — almost always works better than throwing out an ultra-low number.
